London, Macmillan and Co., 1896, First edition. 8vo [23 x 15 cm]; xii, [errata leaf], 224, [ii, publisher's ads] pp, frontis with tissue guard, 8 plates from drwgs, 2 other illus, errata sheets tipped in at pages 1 & 215, index, note inserted at page vii on Bambusa Laydekeri, often lacking. orig pictorial gilt cloth, t. e. g., spine darkened but gilt title lettering clear, light foxing on some leaves, spine ends a bit worn, old signature on endpaper, clean, a very good copy that includes the 3 tipped in note/errata leaves,. The author had spent much time in Japan with the English embassy where he wrote 'Tales of Old Japan' and studied the Bamboos of that country. He acknowledged the help of Sir Joseph Hooker, the eminent botanist of Kew Gardens, to whom he dedicated the book. All bamboo varieties known at the time are included, with lists of species in Asia, Africa, America. The illustrations are by Alfred Parsons, one of the better botanical artists of the time. Besides the culture, cultivation and description of each species, the author includes the uses, history and lore.
